Privacy Policy

OpenFileKit is a set of free tools that open and convert files inside your web browser. This policy explains what happens to the files you open, which other services your browser contacts while you use the site, and how advertising on the site uses cookies.
The short version: your files are never uploaded to us. We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not run an analytics script on the site.
Your files
When you choose or drop a file, JavaScript running in your browser tab reads it directly from your device. All of the work — reading an email, drawing a track on a map, converting a file, producing a PDF — is done by your own browser. The file and its contents are not sent to our servers, and we do not store, see or have any way to recover them.
Files you save from a tool, such as a converted file or a PDF, are created on your device and saved by your browser. Closing or reloading the tab discards the file you had open.
Files dropped on the home page
The home page has a single drop area that sends you to the right tool for your file. To carry the file from the home page to the tool page, the site keeps it for a moment in your browser’s own storage (IndexedDB) on your device. The tool page deletes it from that storage as soon as it has opened it. This storage belongs to your browser; it is not a server and nothing in it is transmitted to us.
If you leave the site before the tool page has opened the file, that copy stays in your browser’s storage until your next visit: the home page and every tool page delete any leftover copy when they load. You can also remove it at any time by clearing the site data for openfilekit.com in your browser settings.
Images in emails
Emails often contain images that are not stored in the email itself but are fetched from the sender’s server when the message is displayed. Senders can use these requests to learn that a message was opened. For that reason the email viewers block remote images until you press “Load images”.
If you press “Load images”, your browser requests those images from the servers named in the email. Those servers will see your IP address and the usual details a browser sends with any request. We do not control those servers and do not receive anything from them.
Map tiles
The KML and GPX viewers draw your file on top of a background map. The pieces of that map (“tiles”) are downloaded by your browser from OpenFreeMap. As with any web request, that provider sees your IP address and which area of the map was requested. It never receives your file: the placemarks, tracks and routes are drawn over the map by your own browser.
The KML to GPX and GPX to KML converters do not load a map.
Hosting
The site is delivered by a hosting provider. To deliver the pages, the provider processes standard request data: your IP address, your browser type and version, the pages and files requested, and the date and time of each request. This information is used to serve the site, keep it secure and diagnose faults. It does not include the files you open in the tools.
Advertising and cookies
OpenFileKit is free to use and is funded by advertising. We use Google AdSense to show ads on the site. The site’s own code does not set cookies, but the advertising service does:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s prior visits to this website and other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- Users may opt out of personalised advertising by visitingGoogle’s Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some other vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising atwww.aboutads.info.
Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for their consent before personalised ads are shown, and can decline. If you decline, you may still see ads, but they are not based on your previous visits.
Advertising code runs separately from the tools. It has no access to the files you open, and file contents are never shared with advertisers. To learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services, seeHow Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The tools keep working if you do.
What we do not collect
- We do not receive or store the files you open, or anything inside them.
- We do not have user accounts, so we hold no names, passwords or profiles.
- We do not run an analytics or visitor-tracking script of our own.
Children
The site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the tools do not send us any files or account details, there is nothing of that kind for us to hold.
Changes to this policy
If the way the site works changes — for example, if a new tool contacts a new service — this page will be updated and the “Last updated” date at the top will change. The policy that applies is the one published here at the time of your visit.
